Chapter Book Project
A short story based on a Finnish Folktale. It follows a newly orphaned young sparrow who stumbles upon a fox trapped in the woods. The sparrow rescues and patches up the Fox, who then begins a quest to make the Sparrow happy again.
I began this project as a way to practice interpreting text in a chapter book format. I found a book of Finnish Folktales in the public domain and created characters and scenes based on that. Some themes of the story were outdated, as many old stories are, but I loved the characters and the implications for illustrations in the storytelling.
I changed the characters to woodland animals, and began redrafting how the story would play out today. Focusing on friendship and self fulfillment rather than power or riches.
